Experimental Characterization of an Alkaline Electrolyser and a Compression System for Hydrogen Production and Storage

Storing renewable energy in chemicals, like hydrogen, can bring various benefits high density, seasonal storability, possible cost reduction of the final product, and potential to let power penetrate other markets overcome their intermittent availability. In last year’s production this gas from sources via electrolysis has grown its reputation as one feasible solution satisfy future zero-emission demand. To extend exploitation Renewable Energy Source (RES), small-scale conversion plants seem be an interesting option. view a widespread adoption these types plants, authors intend present experimental characterization hydrogen storage plant. The considered plant is based on alkaline electrolyser air-driven compression system. results show that production-specific consumption is, average, 77 kWh/kgH2. compressor requirement 15 kWh/kgH2 (data referred driving compressed air). value higher than data found literature (4.4–9.3 kWh/kgH2), but difference attributed small size choice limit stages.
